Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Matthew 5:5
“But the meek shall inherit the earth, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.” Psalm 37:11
Another word for meek is humble. This speaks of the person who humbly accepts the guidance and sovereignty of God, going wherever He leads Him, but never gets resentful or bitter. It is the willing submission to the direction and plan of another.
Meekness is not a lack of strength. This word also speaks of the horse that has been tamed. It is power under control. There is an appropriate time for the horse to exert its power, under the direction and will of the trainer. Blessed are those who are angry at the right time and for the right reason. When anger is for the sake of the self, that is not the right reason.
To inherit the earth is to gain that which God has promised (for the Jew it was the land, for us it is the blessings of love, joy, and peace). You inherit Christ in you now, and the new earth for all eternity.
